We’re counting down the weeks until we’re back in St Ives for May half term — and already talking about the little routines we always seem to fall back into when we’re there.
There’s something about this time of year that makes the trip feel even more special. The days are longer, the air is softer, and the town feels like it’s gently getting ready for the season ahead. It’s not quite the height of the holiday rush, but everything is beginning to wake up again. And, it’s dog friendly. To us, it feels like one of the most dog-friendly seaside towns in the UK. Dogs are welcomed in many cafés, pubs and shops – as well as beaches, you just need to be aware of the restrictions during holiday periods.
And if we’re honest, it’s the simple things we’re most excited about. For us, May half term in St Ives isn’t about big plans or busy itineraries. It’s about settling into a slower pace and returning to the simple things that make being here feel like a proper break from everyday life.

Early morning beach walks
Our mornings tend to begin early in St Ives, thanks to Bob – which means we make the most of the beaches before restrictions come into place at 10am.
Those quiet starts to the day have become part of our routine now. The beaches are calm, the town is just beginning to stir, and there’s something about walking along the shoreline before breakfast that makes the whole day feel slower from the outset.
Coffee and pastries by the harbour
We already know the shape those mornings will take.
A walk along the sand, followed by a stop for takeaway coffee and a pastry from one of our favourite spots, before slowly making our way around the harbour and back to our Cottage before the bay begins to wake up.
It’s never rushed. Just an easy way to ease into the day.
Coastal Walk to Carbis Bay
By late morning, we’re usually wandering through the streets of St Ives – dipping into shops, stopping to watch the boats, or simply finding somewhere to sit for a while. All before taking the coastal path over to Carbis Bay.
There’s no real plan, and that’s kind of the point. It’s easy to fill an afternoon without really doing very much at all – which is often exactly what we need.
Evenings that stretch a little longer
One of the things we’re most looking forward to is the lighter evenings.
A second walk along the beach, sitting with a beer or glass of rose as the sun begins to dip, or just watching the town shift into evening mode. It’s these small, unplanned moments that always end up being the ones we remember most.
Slowing down together
More than anything, we’re excited to slow things down for a few days.
To step away from the usual routines at home, spend time outdoors, and settle into that familiar rhythm that St Ives seems to make so easy.
Roll on May half term.
