You’ve chosen Cornwall – yay for that! But what should go on your packing list…
Whether you’re heading down for windswept coastal walks, lazy beach days, or cream teas in charming villages, one thing’s for sure: packing smart can make all the difference.
We’re a family of three (with a 13-year-old who’s always growing out of something) and we travel with our Bob the Chocolate Labrador, so we’ve learnt a few tricks over the years. Here’s our go-to Cornwall packing list to help make your trip smooth, fun, and fuss-free.
It’s sometimes hard to know what to pack when you go on holiday, especially if you’re holidaying in the UK – and perhaps more so at the moment with everchanging weather conditions. I always have a packing list running in my notes section on my phone! There are a few essentials that we suggest you don’t leave home without, so – here’s our handy packing guide which will ensure you can have your best trip yet.
What to Pack for Cornwall: A Family & Dog-Friendly Guide
1. Essentials for the Unpredictable Weather
Let’s be honest—Cornish weather has a mind of its own. Come rain, shine or sea mist, you’ll want to be ready. So, I would recommend:
Waterproof jackets for everyone (yes, even in summer!), Wellies or walking boots – ideal for muddy paths or coastal hikes, Layers – hoodies, fleeces and t-shirts to mix and match and an Umbrella or poncho, just in case.
Top tip: Microfibre towels are a lifesaver—lightweight, quick-drying, and great for beach or rain-soaked dogs.
2. Beach & Adventure Kit
Cornwall is packed with beaches, so even if you’re not planning to surf, you’ll need your seaside stash. Don’t forget to pack:
Swimsuits and extra towels, Flip flops or beach shoes, Sun cream and hats – the sun can surprise you! and a Beach blanket or picnic rug and lastly Buckets, spades & a frisbee (yes, even for teens – and dogs!). This year we’re bringing a new game – Can-off which is such good fun and great for all the family.
Teen tip: A waterproof phone pouch might save the day…
3. Dog Must-Haves
Cornwall is wonderfully dog-friendly, but a bit of prep helps keep tails wagging.
Lead and harness (spares for when they get wet) – ideal for cliff walks and busy villages, Poo bags and travel water bowl, Dog towels (Cornish seas = soggy pups), Dog bed or blanket for comfort wherever you’re staying and lastly a stash of treats and toys to keep them happy on car journeys and at the pub! Ooh and one more, a beach tent!
4. Out & About Bag
Whether you’re wandering through St Ives or hiking to Tintagel, a day bag is your best friend. Here are some essentials to pack:
Reusable water bottles, Snacks (for everyone!), Power bank for phones, Hand sanitiser and tissues and a Lightweight backpack to carry it all
5 – Accommodation Extras (Just in Case)
Depending on where you’re staying, it’s worth checking what’s provided—and what’s not. Some thoughts on extra items to bring:
Bedding or towels (some dog-friendly places ask you to bring your own), Dog crate or gate if needed and lastly Chargers (don’t forget the teen’s!)
Final Tips
Check beach rules for dogs – some have seasonal restrictions which I’ve written about here.
Pack some entertainment – books, games, and downloads for rainy evenings or quiet nights in. We carry Uno everywhere we go!
Leave space for souvenirs – pasties don’t count, they’ll be gone by the time you get home!
