Some holidays are about discovering somewhere completely new. Others are about returning to somewhere that already feels a little familiar.
This summer, we chose the latter. As we returned from last years’ Summer holiday in America, we made the decision that returning to Kefalonia was what we wanted to do for our 2026 Summer holiday.
We went back to Kefalonia for the second time, to the same quiet corner of the island where life seems to slow almost immediately. A secluded village sitting above the beach, a villa to call home for a while, a little hire car parked outside, and days with very few plans.
And honestly, as it turns out, that was exactly what we wanted and needed.
Kefalonia: Why We Came Back
Returning somewhere we already loved
There’s always a slight worry when you return somewhere you loved the first time.
Will it feel the same? Will you wonder why you didn’t choose somewhere new instead? Can a second visit ever quite live up to the memories of the first?
Thankfully, Kefalonia did.
There was something lovely about arriving and already knowing our surroundings. Recognising the roads, remembering favourite places, and feeling that sense of familiarity almost immediately.
But there was still so much of the island left for us to discover.
Villa life
For us, staying in a villa is a huge part of what makes this kind of holiday work.
There’s no breakfast deadline and nowhere we need to be first thing in the morning. We can wake slowly, make coffee, sit outside and decide what we fancy doing that day.
Some days that means packing up the car and heading out to explore. Other days, staying close to the villa and doing very little feels like exactly the right plan.
It gives us that balance between having a base that feels like home (with an incredible view), and still being able to have an adventure whenever we want one.
Away from the crowds
We stay in a small, quiet village above the beach, away from the busier ‘resort’ like villages. Kefalonia isn’t like other Greek islands.
It’s secluded and peaceful, which is exactly what we love about it.
We can head down towards the sea when we want to, but at the end of the day we retreat back up to our little corner of the island.
There’s something about that quiet that makes you switch off properly.
Hiring a car and seeing where the day takes us
Hiring a car is another big part of our Kefalonia holidays.
It gives us the freedom to wake up without a fixed itinerary and decide where we want to explore that day. A beach we’ve spotted, a little village, somewhere for lunch or simply a road that looks like it might lead somewhere beautiful.
And in Kefalonia, it usually does.
Some of our favourite days have been the ones where we’ve packed swimwear and towels into the car and simply set off.
Finding those hidden beaches
One of the things we love most about Kefalonia is finding somewhere to swim or a breathtaking view.
The island has its famous beaches, of course, but it’s the smaller coves and quieter stretches of coastline that we really enjoy discovering.
We’ll park up, walk down towards the water, put on our snorkels and spend hours swimming and exploring.
There’s something quite special about finding a little beach or vista that feels almost entirely yours.
A different kind of family holiday
As George gets older, our family holidays are changing too.
We don’t need children’s clubs or packed days of activities anymore. We can explore together, snorkel, swim, stop somewhere for lunch or simply spend an afternoon doing absolutely nothing.
There’s a freedom that comes with travelling with a teenager that we’re really starting to appreciate.
And Kefalonia suits this stage of our family life perfectly.
Why we came back
I suppose that’s the answer. We came back because Kefalonia gives us the kind of holiday we need.
Sunshine. Sea. Space. Family time.
A villa hidden away from the crowds. A car to explore the island. Beaches waiting to be discovered and days that don’t need to be planned from morning until night.
Our second visit didn’t feel like repeating the first. It simply reminded us why we’d fallen in love with Kefalonia in the first place.
And I have a feeling it won’t be our last.
